The Little Tree

The little tree

Our tree this year is 3 ft tall….that’s it.

I chose to only put up “the little tree” because we will be in North Dakota for Christmas this year staying with my youngest son and his family (one being are new granddaughter!).

There is more to “the little tree” being the one I chose than traveling for Christmas. This tree means all my kids will not be here to celebrate Christmas together this year. My heart is torn….1100 miles apart.

I never dreamed of how different it would become from how it was when our boys were little. How could I have known then that they would live in 3 different states! My heart is torn. Yet, this is my reality.

How do I want to navigate this? Right now, it’s with tear streaming down my face. The kindest thing for myself is to feel it all…the loss of what used to be, the joy in celebrating the birth of Jesus, the distance, the fun and activities of the Christmas season.

How ironic that the ornaments I put on “the little tree” are my travel ornaments. The memories from all the different places we’ve been either with the boys or just Craig and I.

So, I will embrace “the little tree” and all that it holds on this journey with my three sons.
